Buenos
Aires was born between the harbor and the widest brownish
river of the world, Rio de la Plata. It had been a little village
till the XIX century, when with the constructions of avenues,
mansions, high buildings designed by the most famous architects
of Europe, it became the most European and sophisticated city
of South America.
Just only at ten-hour of flight away from Europe and The USA.
The weather is warm. In winter, July becomes the coldest month of the
year, without snow or sleet. The temperature in winter is 3 to 8 centigrade
grades.
You
can't help feeling astonished by the different architectonic mixture
of styles in BA, which are the same you can find in other big cities
of the world.
BA has a great metropolitan style with art galleries, museums, theatres,
movie theatres, bars, cool restaurants, elegant shops, shopping malls,
nightclubs, Bingos and Casinos.
With a population around 11.000.000, it becomes between the ten most
popular cities in the entirely world.
The “Porteño”,
name given to the BA citizens, is a lover of culture, entertainment,
football and gatherings in bars.
BA
has two main airports, one for international flights, Ezeiza,
22 kilometers from the city centre, and the other Jorge
Newbery, for domestic flights within the country and
its boundaries, at only 6 kilometers from the city, situated
on the shores of the Rio de La Plata.
Buenos Aires, like other great cities of the world, has its share of
hotels and accommodation of different categories in the centre and
around the city.
There are five subway lines interconnecting the city. The tube is similar
to other cities, being the fastest and most practical way of commuting,
chosen by the Porteños, traveling to and from work to different
points in and out of the city.
The timetable of these services is Monday to Saturday from 6.00 to
23.00 and Sundays from 8.00 to 22.00. The buses known as “colectivos” have
more than 100 lines running throughout the city and great Buenos Aires.
They have a 24 hours service.
The “Porteños” love to eat, and the city reflexes
this with its endless quantity of cool restaurants. You can find typical
food from different countries and regions in Buenos Aires, such as
French, Japanese, Jewish, Italian, Mexican, Armenian, Vegetarian and
Spanish food, just to mention a few. The most outstanding dish is the
famous Argentine meat, cooked on the char-grill, without forgetting
the famous sausages and salads. Local cooking is varied and delicious.
Also try the small pasties called “empanadas” with a range
of different fillings, and the typical stews as “Locro” prepared
with corn, and “Carbonada”.
Don't
forget the “mate”, a popular Argentinean and Uruguayan
herb tea beverage. This infusion is drunk throughout the day
and it is a mixture of “mate” herb and water (with
or without sugar and fruit rind). You can see many Argentineans
sitting in parks with a flask enjoying this infusion.
Argentinean
wines are well known through out the world and follow
strict quality control procedures, obtaining excellent red wines
with stocks like Malbec, Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot;
and Chardonnays, Chenin and Sauvignon Blanc in white wines, just
to mention a few.
Bars & Cafes are
the most frequent places visited by the “Porteños”,
at any time during the day, to watch television, study, or just
to chat with friends. One of the most famous and traditional
of these bars is The “Tortoni Café”,
in Avenida de Mayo. The Tortoni has an art gallery where you
can enjoy different shows at nights: played tangos and recited
poetry. “Las Violetas” is another
beautiful and famous bar, located on the corner of Medrano and
Rivadavia Av. “La Biela” in Recoleta
and “La Academia” on Callao and
Corrientes.
The
most outstanding quarters, known for their food and restaurants,
are Las Cañitas, Puerto
Madero and Palermo Viejo. Buenos Aires has a very exciting
nightlife. The restaurants are most frequently visited after
ten o'clock at night and nightclubs are open till 6 or 7 in the
morning, being different from New York and Paris.
Shops are generally open from 9.00 to 20.00 and from 9.00 to 13.00
on Saturdays, excepting those within the tourist zones like Plaza San
Martin, which opens all day on Saturdays and Sundays.
The banks open their doors to the public from 10.00 to 15.00, from
Monday to Friday.
